Use the export you actually need to repair
Some tools start from a Google account or a browser download flow, while others repair a Takeout export already stored on disk. Decide whether you need acquisition, metadata repair, folder organization, or all three before comparing a headline feature list.
Takeout Rescue is designed for numbered Google Photos Takeout ZIP files or an extracted Takeout folder. It does not replace Google Takeout and does not connect to a Google Photos account.
Compare more than photo timestamps
Use representative files: edited dates, screenshots, videos, HEIC/MOV pairs, repeated album copies, truncated supplemental names and sidecars placed in another ZIP. A folder of camera JPEGs alone does not exercise the difficult parts of Takeout.
Check timezone offsets, GPS, descriptions, video container dates, duplicate handling, albums, dynamic-photo resources, failure reporting and whether the original export remains unchanged.
Where Takeout Rescue fits
Takeout Rescue accepts all selected archives as one job, resolves sidecars and repeated album copies across that library, and reads supported metadata back after writing. JSON and CSV reports stay beside the separate output.
It currently supports Windows and macOS. You can inspect one real 10-file export before purchase; current license options are a $9 single-library export and $24 permanent access.
When another metadata fixer may fit better
Metadata Fixer is an established paid desktop option whose official site publishes its own supported workflow. A browser-based tool can be convenient when its privacy and file-size model fits your library. Google Photos Takeout Helper can suit users comfortable with an open-source command-line workflow focused on organizing an extracted export.
Choose the alternative that supports your operating system, input shape and destination. Treat every vendor feature claim as something to verify with a representative sample rather than proof that every edge case in your library is covered.
When ExifTool directly may fit
ExifTool gives experienced users detailed control over metadata fields and is an essential repair engine. It is a good choice when you can design and validate filename matching, timezone conversion, format-specific tags, duplicate handling and rollback yourself.
The difficult part of a Takeout repair is often deciding which evidence belongs to which media file, not running the final write command.
Verify before committing the library
Re-import representative output into the destination and compare dates, timezones, GPS, descriptions, videos and dynamic-photo resources. Review unmatched and failed items rather than evaluating only the repaired count.
Keep every original ZIP so you can repeat the job with another workflow. This page links to official product sources, but it is not a substitute for a first-party test of your own export.
