Repair portable fields before NAS indexing
Create a separate repaired output with format-appropriate capture dates, coordinates and descriptions, then let Synology Photos index that output. This makes the filesystem archive useful outside the Synology database as well.
Keep the original Takeout archives on independent storage until the NAS copy and its backup have been verified.
Understand Synology metadata support
Synology documents support for EXIF, XMP and IPTC, including date-taken fields for photos. Support varies by file type, and the package cannot read or write every tag on every photo or video container.
In particular, Synology documents limitations for video descriptions, ratings and locations and for writing some edits back to original media. Test what the current package displays instead of assuming photo behavior applies to videos.
Reconcile duplicate album exports
A NAS import can multiply storage quickly when the same bytes appear in chronological and album folders. Use full content hashes to identify exact repetitions while preserving album membership in the chosen output structure.
Do not delete same-named or visually similar images automatically because they can be edits or files from another device.
Choose an organization that remains portable
A year or year/month directory is predictable for backup tools and ordinary file browsing. If album folders are also created, hard links can avoid repeated physical storage on supported filesystems.
Keep the JSON and CSV report beside the archive so an indexed item can be traced to its original Takeout path.
Validate after indexing
Inspect several dates, timezones, locations, formats and videos in Synology Photos after its metadata jobs complete. Compare those results with the repaired file metadata and report.
If the package ignores a field that exists in the file, changing the source value blindly may not help; confirm the documented format limit first.
